Nearly 500,000 Australians are vision impaired in both eyes.

This could increase to 800,000 by 2024.

The total cost of vision disorders in Australia was estimated to be $9.85 billion in 2004.

Three quarters of vision impairment is caused by conditions that are preventable or treatable with early intervention:

• Diabetic Eye Disease
• Glaucoma
• Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)
• Refractive Error

The Lions Eye Health Program (LEHP pronounced 'leap') - Australia is a community education program which raises the awareness of eye disease and promotes regular and timely eye examinations. This provides the opportunity to detect prevalent eye diseases in their early stages and reduce avoidable vision loss.
