- Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of blindness in Australia and is responsible for 48% of severe vision loss.
- The incidence of AMD increases dramatically in the last decades of life.
- AMD runs in families and some genes have been identified.
- At present less than 20% of those with AMD can be treated to either retain or improve vision.
- The only modifiable risk factor for AMD is smoking.

Check your family history: Age Related Macular Degeneration can be inherited.
Smoking is a known risk factor. Every cigarette is doing you damage.
